After August 1

How winners get paid.

  • Paid at the Award Ceremony

Finalists hear by August 15. Winners are announced and paid by check at the Award Ceremony at the end of August.

  • Be there to get paid

You have to attend the ceremony to receive a cash prize. HSH can make exceptions case by case.

  • Prizes are taxable

Cash awards count as taxable income. The $5,000 award needs a W-9 first, from a parent or guardian if you're under 18.

  • Sign the release

Winners, and a parent or guardian for anyone under 18, sign a winner and publicity release before any money goes out.

The rules, short version

What counts.

Who

U.S. high schoolers

Students in grades 9 to 12 at any public, private, charter, online or home school. Seniors who just graduated can finish the summer. Past winners can compete again.

What

A hustle you run

It has to be your idea and you have to run it. Adults can drive, lift or lend gear. A parent's business does not count.

Counts

Money you get paid

Payments you receive between June 1 and August 1, logged in the dashboard. Family and friends count when they pay a fair price for real work.

Does not count

Easy money

Investment income, reselling without adding your own work, and raffles or gambling.

Teams

Hustle together

Two or more students can run one hustle. Every teammate registers in the dashboard. Separate hustles cannot merge mid-summer.

Verified

Prove it's yours

Winners are picked on verified numbers, never by chance. Past $5,000 in sales, HSH may ask how your hustle started and who runs it.

This is a summary. The official terms are the rules that count, including team deadlines, payment and regional competitions.
